Orientation means locating your position – where you stand and where you’re headed, in relation to others and a situation. Where you stand might mean you and a colleague notice different things, or notice the same things and size them up differently. Where you’re headed is what you want to do about that – to persuade someone of your view, to reconcile a difference, to pursue your own goal.
It works like orienting yourself to a physical place. When you stand in front of a mall map, find the “you are here” dot, confirm the stores around it are the stores around you, and locate the one you want, you’ve oriented yourself to the map and the mall.
